Weighted Grade Calculation Method

Review the formula, assumptions, and limitations used by the WeightedGrade calculator.

Calculation method

WeightedGrade uses the common weighted-average formula for percentage-based course categories:

Weighted grade = (score1 x weight1 + score2 x weight2 + ... ) / total included weight

Each included category contributes its score multiplied by its category weight. The calculator then divides by the total included weight.

Current grade vs full course estimate

If the included weights add to 100%, the result is a full course-grade estimate.

If the included weights are below 100%, the result is a current-grade estimate for the categories entered so far. The remaining weight can be used in the final-grade planner.

Blank and excluded rows

Blank scores are treated as missing, not zero. If a missing assignment should count as zero, enter 0 as the score and keep that row included.

Rows that are not checked are excluded from the current-grade calculation.

Limitations

The calculator does not automatically apply:

  • Dropped lowest scores.
  • Curve adjustments.
  • Extra credit policies.
  • Late penalties.
  • School-specific rounding.
  • GPA or credit-hour weighting.

For official grade decisions, compare the result with your syllabus and gradebook.
